Ladies and gentlemen,
After some ridiculous time, I now (finally) represent you my very own wedding invitations. Forgive my poor photo quality, these were taken almost 1.5 years ago in a rush, because I really really needed to pop them into the mailbox ASAP. Every wedding preparation involves dramas and hurdles, and mine? It’s more like a test to my sanity. I hope you will like these babies born from my tears and blood (literally) and of course, enjoy the show and tell along the pictures.
So where to begin…Let’s begin with my helpless greedy personality. I always knew invitations would be an important part to me. I used to dream about being an illustrator (believer or not), and I adore papery goods, pretty stationeries and other sorts of creative crafts my whole life. So just like my wedding dress hunt, I spent probably a bit too much time on inspirations…Not sure if I should blame Pinterest..
Once again, there are no wedding without dramas. My personal advise is don’t be too stress out on the invitations, and try to avoid Christmas season to send out cards. You might find it surprisingly hard to reach some guests’ home…
Anyway, more details below and I really really hope you will like them and have a laugh at my struggles. It’s a wedding of course, but stress is the least thing we want in a wedding, isn’t it? At the end of the day, you might be the only person (me) who cares about these details!
Stay stress free,
xxx Aka
I chose blush, gold foil and cream to have that soft touch which my personality probably lacks…
I am a big fan of vintage floral prints and typography. Been searching days online to look for these elegant illustrations and fonts reveals I could be very an*l.
Because I printed out the information part myself, so I searched again and found these leather looked A4 papers, trimmed and glued them all by myself…( I know, I know…)
For the envelopes, I bought the envelopes online 2 times due to the colour difference from the screen. But this was the easy part, printing them without smudging it with black ink was quite tricky. I spent nights swearing to the printer and googling the solutions then finally got some great ones turned out! Really happy about the result, but after envelopes, I had to print the address and I was too stupid to use label stickers…Yes you heard right, I glued them onto the envelopes all by myself AGAIN….
Who would know it’s really darn hard to buy decent golden ribbons/ twines in Christmas season? I went to quite a few shops and even needed to try online stores and they were out of stock! Make sure you have what you need before November…
Guess you don’t need to see another “by myself” words to understand how long are these tasks took me. I don’t understand why I couldn’t just go with whatever the common paper sizes in Australia, or even just use designed online templates.
When I immersed myself in Pinterest for the inspirations, some parts of my soul were just lit up the fire and wanted everything MY WAY.
It might not look as perfect, but I can proudly say each card was 80% handmade. It might not be “organic” but it’s got my soul in it.
Apple flowers, strawberry blossom, wax sealed initials, mushrooms and fox…Maybe it contains a bit too many elements, but well, it’s my one and only wedding invitation… You want to be happy about it and indulge yourself with the things you love since you don’t want to design another one for yourself again…(I guess?)
p.s: That wax seal gave me a total melt down. I bought a minty colour initially and it turned out like an alien spit, so I had to purchase cream colour from other sellers from Canada. The new wax sticks were darn hard and would stick on the metal part of the seal. I had to use butter knife to get them off before they completely cool down and it burnt my thumbs several times. Even tried the ceramic plates, muffin trays and baking paper to achieve a clear, round wax seal stamp……..Those nights working on these bastards terrified Andrew even, he even thought why he’s signed up for this….I am not me when I dealt with these wax seals. Not to mention I realised I can get someone to do it as stickers afterwards. (Roar)
The moral of the story is sometimes you really want to get things done. Spend the darn money. It’s not worthy for the stress…
I am not a graphic designer, even I would love to be one. So when it comes to the printing rules, what I know is really limited. The main card was the only part by someone else, but I designed the whole thing myself. I didn’t know what layers they have to see, what files and how thin would cause they merged together and lost the shape. Every day I went home after work, first thing was turning on my old macbook to see what they replied and googled again to fix the problems. Looking back, I feel really appreciated they replaced the proof over and over again for this amateur.
You know what? The gold foil turned out perfect, didn’t smudge and the strokes look so clean and sharp.
